  • The best seasons to grow bitter gourd are between April – May and July – September. Location Constraints: The bitter gourd plant is a creeper and a home garden requires a trellis setup to support the creeper. Choose a sunny spot in the garden that receives good amount of sunlight during the day.
  • Bitter gourd grows well in medium-sized containers. Select the containers of 12 inches deep and 10-inch width for growing bitter gourd. The bitter gourd plant grows up to 5m long, needs a sturdy trellis.
  • — Grow maize as border crop as the flies have the habit of resting on such tall plants. Maize alone can be sprayed with insecticides. — Use ribbed gourd as trap crop and apply carbaryl 0.15 per cent or malathion 0.1 per cent on congregating adult flies on the under surface of leaves
  • Bitter gourd is a summer vegetables. But in extreme heat conditions it is better to grow them under partial shade. At very high temperatures the fruits tend to get 'cooked' in the sun; they become soft and dry.
  • Bitter gourds can be harvested 2.5- 3 months after seed sowing. Harvesting season can continue for about six weeks and even further. Harvest the bitter gourd at the right time when the fruit is neither too small and young, nor it is too hard and fibrous.
  • Gourds need plenty of water to grow, and that's especially true during dry and hot periods. Young plants need more watering than established plants. It's best to do several light waterings, in the beginning, to help the roots grow and establish. Give your plants 1 inch of water per week.
